About Travel

The Westfield Select Soccer Club is the Travel Soccer program under the WYSA umbrella. It is geared toward players that have a desire to develop their skills above what they might be able to achieve at the recreational level, and for those who would like to play for their high school soccer team.

The Travel soccer program is designed to advance the development of our players, enhancing individual and team skills. Travel players receive soccer technique and tactics training each week from a licensed youth soccer coach, under the supervision of Westfield Select's Director of Coaching Gary Walker, and Girls and Boys Directors.

Travel teams range in age from U11 through U14 in the fall, and U11 through U18 in the spring. Travel teams compete against teams from other communities, generally within an hour drive of Westfield. Teams are placed in leagues and divisions that are appropriate for their skill level. Teams play a league schedule and enter tournaments each season.

U11 - U18 teams are selected through open try-outs that are conducted in early June. Players do not need to live in Westfield to play in any WYSA program -- recreational soccer, Academy or Select Travel. Team selection involves a variety of activities where participants are evaluated for individual and team skills and their understanding of the game. Depending on how many children try-out there may be more than one team in any age group.

Time Commitment

Westfield Select Travel teams generally practice two days per week. U13 - U18 teams practice three nights a week. Practices are held at Shamrock Springs Elementary School in Westfield.

Games are scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays. It is not uncommon to play games both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday games are played in the afternoon.

Practice for the fall season begins in early August with games being played from mid-August to mid-October. Spring practices start in early March with games being played from late March to early June.

Parents are also expected to volunteer during club hosted tournaments, assist with field maintenance, such as putting up and taking down nets and striping the fields as well as other special events with which the club is involved.

Additional Travel Expenses

Each team will develop a budget for additional expenses, including referee fees, tournament expenses and other ancillary expenses such as a team party. Tournament expenses will vary depending upon the number of tournaments a team chooses to play and the number of players on a team. Each team is expected to play in WSSC hosted tournaments, and encouraged to participate in at least two tournaments per season. Referee fees are a fixed cost and vary slightly by age group.
